L’année 2007 semble bien démarrer pour Albion, qui vient de faire une annonce importante sur son MySpace.

Le groupe s’engage en effet à mettre en ligne une nouvelle chanson tous les mois. Enregistrés spécialement pour MySpace, ces titres inédits pourront être téléchargés gratuitement pendant une période limitée. A priori, aucun de ces morceaux ne devrait figurer sur le premier album d’Albion.

Singer Alistair Griffin is ready to put the ghost of Fame Academy to bed when appearing at Stockton's Riverside Festival with his new band.

Exactly three years to the day since the Castleton musician entered the hit TV show's house, he will kick off a new assault on the music scene by performing at the Stockton Riverside Fringe Festival. Only this time, it's with a new band – Albion.

The name has been bandied around for months, but has only now been confirmed. They have already played the odd gig, including last month's Black Sheep Brewery Festival at Masham where, with the band still not ready to confirm their identity, they bizarrely performed as Rockdapussy. But on August 6 at the festival's Riverside stage, the Albion era begins in earnest.

Alistair acknowledges it has been an almost surreal three years, with the highs of reaching the Fame Academy final, scoring a top five single "Bring It On" and a top 20 album being followed by the frustrations of trying to maintain that success.

But, buoyed by a small army of fans who have remained loyal since FA, he hopes Albion can soon make their mark.

Asked to describe his rollercoaster three years, he said simply: "Tempestuous." He said: "But really, it's what happens now that's important. You've always got to look to the future and find the positives."

Albion – Alistair, brothers Tom and James Martin, Walter Laybourne and Simon Waggott – are currently recording songs, although the eagerly-awaited album is some way off yet. Meanwhile, they intend putting some snippets on the Myspace.com website and setting up their own site.

Of Stockton, he said: "It'll be good to be gigging back on our doorstep and launching something like Albion. It's not like it's a small gig in the back room of a pub, it's a good stage to set things off on."

Alistair Griffin has gone triple dutch in Holland after notching up a hit song hat-trick. Songs penned by the North Yorkshire singer-songwriter, but recorded by other artists, have crashed into the Dutch charts and helped an album earn runaway sales.

The first to make waves was Dutch Pop idol runner-up Jim Bakkum, who covered Alistair’s second single, You and Me (Tonight), on his huge selling debut album. Then shapely pop star Do – short for Dominique Van Hulst – scored a singles chart top ten success with a version of Angel By My Side. And now boy band Di-Rect – who look and sound a bit like Busted – have reached number three in the singles chart with their version of Alistair’s song Hungry For Love. It even beats Alistair’s highest British chart placing – number five with his debut single, Bring It On.

“It is strange that my songs are going down well in Holland, especially as the Dutch public don’t know me,” Alistair told the Gazette. “A few TV and radio channels are playing my versions of the songs but that’s it. But I’m being told that Holland is a good testing ground for the rest of Europe. I may not be able to retire on the royalties from these three, but things are looking up!”

For now, Alistair is locked away writing material for a new album. If all goes to plan, that record should be released by a German record company later this year.

Alistair’s Dutch success was first revealed on website www.alistair-griffin.co.uk by diehard fan Shanna Wolsing of Zwolle, Holland. Shanna, 17, has twice seen Alistair 'live' – once in January 2004 at a record signing in Leeds, then in Bremen last September, where he was appearing on Bee Gee Robin Gibb’s German tour.
